  1. With a bang and a whimper, beta version 0.8 of NCSA's Motif-based
  2. networked information systems and World Wide Web browser, X Mosaic, is
  3. hereby released:

  7. This release of X Mosaic is known to compile on the following
  8. platforms:
  9.  
  10.   SGI (IRIX 4.0.2) 
  11.   IBM (AIX 3.2)
  12.   Sun 4 (SunOS 4.1.2 with stock X11R4 and Motif 1.1).
  13.   DEC Ultrix.
  14.  
  15. Binaries for these platforms are available:

  19. More binaries will be supplied as I am able to find other
  20. Motif-configured platforms to use.  (Contributions of working binaries
  21. are welcome.)  Documentation is available online, but is temporarily
  22. out of date (I'll probably bring it up to date this weekend).

  24. Changes since 0.7 include:
  25.  
  26.  o Telnet access is enabled for IBM systems (and others that don't define
  27.    'unix' by default).
  28.  o TN3270 access is now available (probably will only work on IBM
  29.    systems).
  30.  o Underline setting now carries from window to window like it should.
  31.  o Stupid little bugs nailed in open local file routines.
  32.  o More stupid little bugs nailed in opening multiple windows.
  33.  o Fixed buglet with text fields on some platforms.
  34.  o Most plaintext documents can now be annotated (except for results of
  35.    WAIS queries and those that use <plaintext> explicitly).
  36.  o Annotate and Edit Annotation menubar entries disabled for stupid Ultrix,
  37.    since the annotation window causes a spurious BadWindow error for no
  38.    apparent reason at all.
  39.  o Better colors (including brighter colors on non-SGI platforms).
  40.  o Makefile option to compile with mono colors as the default.
  41.  o Revised copyright notice.
  42.  o A few random bugfixes and cleanups.

  44. Although this is beta software, I'm looking more for feedback on
  45. design and functionality than bug reports right now -- down the road
  46. the bulk of the program will be rewritten in C++ anyway, so don't take
  47. the current code too seriously.  But bug reports are welcome too.  New
  48. releases will probably come out about every 7-14 days until 1.0
  49. arrives.
